Kate Dunphy
Kate Dunphy is a professional accordionist and composer residing in Brooklyn, NY. Originally hailing from Portland, ME, Kate grew up in a musical family and started studying the piano at the age of 4. She was exposed to many different musical traditions at a young age through her father's career as a banjoist and her mother's career as a dance teacher/choreographer. She went on to earn her BA in music composition at the Hartt School of Music in Hartford, CT where she studied composition under Dr. Robert Carl and Dr. David Macbride and was the recipient of the Diamente Award in composition. An invitation to write for the Tin Hat Trio in 2004 piqued her interest in the accordion and she began to pursue the instrument shortly thereafter. Kate enjoys exploring different musical traditions and composing pieces which hybridize styles and incorporate improvisation. She has had the pleasure of composing music for films, plays, poets, and dancers, as well as collaborating with many talented musicians from around the world who constantly inspire her and expose her to new musical ideas. When she's not performing with Loukoum, Kate plays with several other ensembles including Chicholina Sound Machine, The Main Squeeze Orchestra, Kagero, and The Butcher Knives.
